Since the onset of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in March, 46% of our P.O.W.W.O.W. have elected to not host fortunately we have 28 Arizona markets who have remained “on board”, with those 28 markets our distribution has increased by 24.5%. Borderlands Produce Rescue has been able to sustain the increase of new supporters either from unemployment and/or shortage of groceries at the supermarkets by implementing a prepackaged produce box drive thru service at all of our markets to promote more social distance. Drive your vehicle to the registration area, contribute your $12 cash (exact change preferred) and someone will load the produce box. We couldn’t have been able to provide this successful service without the help of our volunteers who have stepped up exponentially. When you visit one of our markets this Saturday, April 25th from 8-11am, please remember to be patient and also be safe.
We consider ourselves, our host sites and volunteers First Responders/Frontline workers, rescuing and distributing these fresh fruits and veggies to Arizonans through our P.O.W.W.O.W. program. Remember this produce is rescued, stored and staged in Nogales before it reaches our Arizona host sites. All of this is done with the volunteer help of our furloughed workers and members of the community. Prior to COVID-19 our labor-force were 12 gentleman from the Arizona Department of Corrections, which program was suspended pending further orders from our State officials. Although it is difficult to work without their help we know how important it is to continue to reach Arizonans. We depend on your help in order to help you. We work without government dollars, you won’t see us advertising on Billboards, Radio or TV commercials, we are truly a “MOM and POP” non-profit, but we are Gigantic in our Mission, rescuing fresh produce for Arizonans, curbing food waste, and helping with the education of Healthy Families – Healthy Planet!
View and download our 2019/20 P.O.W.W.O.W. Produce Season schedule for locations and hours. Please share your pictures and videos of the produce you shopped and the market you attended with your families, neighbors and friends by posting on social media using #produceonwheelswithoutwaste and #produceonwheels so newcomers can understand more about our program.
